The right to life and AIDS- 30 years later
an article by Diana Tashkova

Thirty years after AIDS was discovered it continues to spread throughout the world. United for the idea of strategies for HIV prevention and human rights actions, in Copenhagen in march 2012 took place the “3th HIV in Europe Conference” at Panum Institut under the theme “Working Together for Optimal Testing and Earling Care”.

Scientists, health workers, policy makers, civil society, representatives of the European Public health institutions came from forty countries to provide an overview of the European initiatives and best practices on optimal testing and earlier care. As major problem turned out to be Eastern Europe where the number of people living with HIV increased by 250% from 2001.

” Today, access to HIV treatment in Malawi is better than the access to treatment in St. Petersburg” says Professor Jens Lundgren, co-founder of the HIV in Europe Initiative. HIV epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is the fastest growing in the world thirty years after AIDS was first discovered as a new disease.

There were a lot of the presentations and discussions concerned key issues for HIV testing in Europe, HIV rapid tests in MSM venues, cost effectiveness of HIV testing in non-traditional settings, socio-democratic factors, etc. Recent UNICEF studies showed that in Eastern Europe the age of risky behaviors is decreasing. For example in Ukraine adolescent girls compromise 20% of female sex workers population, and over 30% reported to sell sex between the ages of 12 and 15. Today 30 -50% of European people living with HIV/ AIDS are unaware of their status , approximately 50% of them present late for care. “It is time to put more action behind the words “ says Ton Coenen, Executive-Director, AIDS Action Europe.

“3th HIV in Europe Conference” served as a platform for innovative best practice initiative, knowledge, experience and opportunities for access to HIV prevention, care and treatment responding to the need of development, partnership, collaboration and advocacy to urgently change the situation for the better.
