Equal Rights Granted to Homosexuals
an article by Danny B.

As a member of GSA, the Gay/Straight Alliance, and as a friend of many homosexuals, June is a very important month to me. During June, many marches and parades are held, celebrating gay and lesbian pride, as well as fighting homophobic discrimination. However, this month has never been as important to me as it has been this year.

In the month of June, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to grant U.S. citizens equal rights---rights that these citizens supposedly have had since the U.S. constitution was first formed--- to a group of people that have been discriminated against time and time again by the U.S. government (and by millions of citizens nation and worldwide). In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court forbade and got rid of the anti-sodomy laws that exist in many U.S. states. These anti-sodomy laws either banned sex between two people of the same gender or banned oral and anal sex for any citizen. This, to me, and many others, was a ban on personal privacy.

I applaud the Supreme Court for finally realizing that the privacy granted to all citizens under the constitution applies to, really, ALL citizens, gay or straight. Two adults should be able to do what they want to do behind closed doors, as long as it isn't harmful and doesn't impend on the safety of other fellow Americans. This obvious fact was finally accepted by the Supreme Court, and I respect those 6 justices that made this possible. As for the citizens that believe there should still be a group that has less rights than all other Americans, I encourage them take a look at the consitution.
