Montana Musician Sings about Peace and Justice for a Global Audience
an article by Allison Fromm

Montana folk musician Amy Martin has spent the last five years singing about peace and justice. In 2002 she recorded an album to raise funds for women in Afghanistan, and has already donated more than $9,000 to the Afghan Institute of Learning and RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of Women in Afghanistan.

She recently embarked on a project that will help foster the re-democratization of the music industry. Currently in the States, a few large corporations maintain a high degree of control over the music that reaches fans. Breaking into this market requires a lot of money and the right kind of connections, thus inhibiting the spread of independent music. Although these giants of the music industry fear the internet, the new technology is increasingly providing a way for musicians to bypass the corporate blockade and come into direct contact with listeners.

In the summer of 2004, Martin founded her own company, Raven's Wing Records, which is launching a pay-per-download web site entirely dedicated to her music. As of September 20th, listeners from Montana to Macedonia can log on to her website and hear Martin's unique and personal reactions to events like the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, her take on the U.S. presidency, and her experience of life in rural Montana.

With this latest project, as in so many other instances in her life, Martin is not only talking and singing about change, she is also out there working to make those changes happen.
