Raising Awareness of the Global Landmine Crisis
an article by Alison Bock

Since the death of Princess Diana, the most celebrated champion of the global campaign to ban landmines, the issue has largely disappeared from public view, and private donations for landmine awareness and clearance operations remain scarce.

In August 2003 I founded a grass roots non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the global landmine crisis, the education and engagement of civil society and youth and rebuilding communities on cleared minefields.

Although the organization is less than two years old, we have already raised awareness significantly and have engaged a variety of people to take part.

The next step is to begin building wells in mine affected communities. Cambodia has suffered from civil war for over thirty years. The result is that most of the country is littered with landmines.

70% or 9.7 million Cambodian inhabitants do not have access to clean, uncontaminated drinking water. For about $1,200 we can build a well that provides water, a basic human need to a rural community.
