Event to Benefit Water for Life
an article by Emy Takada
A beautiful young crowd supported the Water for Life
Benefit & Fundraiser at the On Broadway Event Center in San Diego
on March 23, to celebrate the United Nations World Water Day and the
organization's Decade for Water, from 2005 to 2015 (U.N. resolution
58/217).
The inspiration for the event came from the young leadership
of the United Nations Association of San Diego to raise money to
benefit the Surfrider Foundation, Surfaid International, Project
Concern International, and non-profit organizations that work to
protect the ocean and beaches, prevent water born diseases and provide
access to clean water and food.
The event center was located in one of San Diego's most attractive
venues and was divided into different lounges. Each lounge illustrated
the uses of water and its benefits. In the main lounge, a big screen
set behind the stage, showed water-related photos. The live music of
The White Buffalo followed by Ladie Dottie & The Diamonds kept
people dancing until the end of the night.
College students volunteered at each organization's booth to provide
information about their organization and provided explanations about
their projects. In the gallery lounge, an art exhibit was held; ocean
and waves were the inspiration for the artists. Additionally, in the
next lounge, surf films by Poor Specimen were shown in a huge plasma
screen next to the Sea Camp booth. In the Zen lounge, surfers went wild
with Spoken Gun's performance.
At around midnight, a crowd gathered around the fundraising
donation's booth to buy the last raffles in the hope to win one of the
most wanted prizes of the night-a skateboard or a surfboard., with
proceeds going to benefit projects that would improve water
initiatives.
The first year of the event was definitely successful. It was very nice
to be involved in such a belief that young people's power can make
difference.
