Water for Peace
an article by Good News Agency Year 9th, no. 7 - 16 May 2008 www.goodnewsagency.org
Access to water is one of the main reasons for the conflict
between Israelis and Palestinians. The mediation project “Water for
Peace in the Middle East” is striving to conduct a study about the
needs for and availability of water. To this end, the Peres Center for
Peace, Green Cross France and Green Cross Switzerland held a conference
in Geneva from 2 to 4 May 2008. Approximately 30 experts from Israel,
Palestine, Europe and USA will conduct a joint analysis of water needs
and water availability of today and tomorrow for decision makers on the
basis of generally accepted guidelines.

The study will serve as an exemplary model at an international
conference of UNESCO in Paris in November 2008 on the topic of
preventing and solving water conflicts. The key for solving regional
water conflicts lies in finding a solution for managing water in line
with needs. Previous studies and deliberations focused on the existing
inequitable water distribution on the basis of current consumption
patterns and resource analyses. (...)
For the first time, Palestinian and Israeli experts are working
together on a water requirements study, and policy decision-makers are
awaiting the results with interest.

For
sure it is; the question is what is the relation, and for this we can
best listen to the wisdom of so many indigenous peoples, that from
times immemorial are guardians of the earth. If we are not at peace
with our environment, behaving like parasites, how can we even think
about a peacefull and non violent culture for our future
generations....it is like a contradiction in terms. So we have to
heal this error of thinking and realise that the relation between the
environment and peace is one of inextricable boundage.
This is
why I want to bring under your attention the Global Campaign:
SPEAKING4EARTH that is launched at 9 december 2004 in the Peace palace
in The Hague.
Indigenous peoples have a deep spiritual
connection to their land, including the sky, the clouds, the rivers,
the soil and all living creatures. In the indigenous world, it is said
that land is not something you inherit from your ancestors, but rather
something you borrow from your children. Speaking4Earth is a project
connecting this sense of change in the western relationship with the
world with the vision of indigenous peoples that we need to care for
the earth for our future generations.. . ...more.
