Happy New Year from TRANSCEND International
an article by TRANSCEND International www.transcend.org info@transcend.org
Peace Studies is marking the transition between the two jubilee
years: 2008 and 2009! In 1958, Prof. Johan Galtung has started his
academic work in Peace Research and a year later has founded the
world's first International Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO).
With this occasion, TRANSCEND International congratulates all Peace
scholars and practitioners, wishing important achievements for the
field of Peace Studies in the upcoming year of 2009!
In 1993, Prof. Galtung has initiated the Peace and Development Network:
TRANSCEND. In 2008, commemorating the 50 years of his academic work in
Peace Studies, TRANSCEND has launched its publishing house, TRANSCEND
University Press (TUP), which publishes high quality books about peace
by peaceful means, development by developmental means and environment
by environmental means. The first 4 books of the initial series of 14
books have been already released.
Another event celebrating the jubilee, is the launch of the Peace
Journalism internet media outlet: TRANSCEND Media Service (TMS) -
practicing peace journalism with comments, documentation and solution
oriented analysis on current events - with weekly editorials, video
interviews and commentaries.
TRANSCEND has 4 pillars: Action, Education/Training, Dissemination and
Research. The educational pillar is represented by the TRANSCEND Peace
University (TPU). In 2003, following the guideline of interdisciplinary
study, TPU started providing online courses on Peace and Development.
The growing Faculty has contributed to considerable enrichment of our
curriculum, with new courses being added almost each Semester.
In 2009 the focus of TRANSCEND International will also go to the
TRANSCEND Research Institute (TRI), making a growing number of valuable
papers available to the public.
Very important work for Peace is done by the over 300 members of
TRANSCEND all over the world. There are projects like "Positive Peace",
"Sabona" (TRANSCEND in schools, families and at work), "Generals for
Peace", "Conflict Sensitive Development", "The Arab World", "Middle
East", "(North-) East Asia", "The Invisible Continent", "From State
Foreign Policies to Global Domestic Policies" and many others.
Our kind invitation goes to you, to contribute in 2009 to the
development of Peace Studies and Action. Please join our workshops and
public lectures, participate in or recommend TPU online courses to
peace practitioners, NGO workers, and not the least to political and
government workers, since just as we learn to conduct a vehicle, even
more important is to learn to prevent war and build a more peaceful
world (See article "An active peace policy to create a new future" by
Dietrich Fischer). We will wholeheartedly welcome the reviews of the
books published by TUP, your contributions to Peace Journalism on TMS,
and most importantly - please share with us and with the world your
experience and your knowledge of Peace and Development.
Happy New Year!
