Latest Forum of the São Paulo Commitee for the Culture of Peace Decade
an article by Lia Diskin and David Adams

The Comitê Paulista para a Década da Cultura de Paz, in São Paulo, Brazil, has held their 75th forum, this one dedicated to the topic of a new vision of social networks.

The forum featured Professor Augusto de Franco of the Institute of Physics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Here is a rough translation from their website.

"There has been a significant change in our vision of society in recent years concerning social networks. In effect, social networks are surprising. Many of them hope to assume a vanguard position or to emphasis their adherence to others. It is not unusual that we are shocked to discover that a social network is nothing more than a society. A social network is not a new way to call attention to persons, ideas or products.

View of 75th Forum

There is a large literature affirming that the more connected is a person, the more the chances of success in a career or business and there is great interest in discovering the rules of marketing through networks or "viral marketing." Many want to discover some secret of actions that can increase exponentially, amplifying by network mechanisms, in order to systematically change the behavior of people on a large scale.

All this is curious and legitimate, but one can not say the same for motivations and attitudes which sometimes accompany them. In fact, this vision impedes us from seeing the true situation of social networks , i.e. distributed social networks - that they cannot serve those who wish to use them for control or power.

But how can we make a social network in the true sense, i.e. a distributed network? This forum discusses responses to this question."

The 76th forum will be held on October 6, on the topic of Evolutionism and the Politics of Civilization - in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.
