"Hum Sukhi, Jag Sukhi"
an article by Karen Hopkins and Angel Collie

At the 7th Annual International Leadership Training Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum; Dr. Shyamala Raman, a Professor of Economics and International Studies at Saint Joseph College, conducted a workshop on the Millennium Development Goals.

During this workshop she introduced the concept of "Hum Sukhi, Jag Sukhi." This Indian poverb In the native Urdu language breaks down into the words "Hum" which translates into "We," "Sukhi" into "well being," and "Jag" into "world." The English translation of this proverb is thus traditionally understood to mean "my wellbeing is good so all is well with the world."

However, Dr. Raman posed an alternative way of framing this limited perception of the proverb by flipping it on its head. She proposed that we think in terms of "Jag Sukhi, Hum Sukhi" or "all is well with the world and so all is well with me." This reshapes the dialogue among people from a self-indulgent view of the world in terms of our wellbeing as the primary focus, to one that elevates the importance of considering the state world and global community.

As global citizens, we should realize how our actions have an impact on the world we live in and our collective wellbeing is intertwined with the actions of people, nations, and oceans that are miles away. The waste of resources or spread of pollution in one nation has a direct impact on the wellbeing of all. For humanity to thrive in such an environment, we depend on each other for survival.

We must ask how we can be good citizens of our world and work towards the creation of a sustainable future, which is more conscious of the interconnection and interdependence of collective action, sustainability, and cooperation. Together our unity and solidarity can over come the challenges of today and tomorrow.
